About us:

Elaine Casquarelli, LMHC
My commitment to Circle Works! came out of my own 20-year experience of participating in a variety of Circle experiences. The first one occurred during a spiritual retreat. We were a group of women who came together to talk about our struggles, yearnings, and joys. I soon found out that the structure of the Circle helped us feel safe enough to be who were truly were, listen to one another more deeply than we do in our daily lives, hold and support our differences, and encourage one another in our individual journeys. I was hooked. As I continued to participate in Circles and experienced their healing qualities, I knew I had to learn how to facilitate this transformational experience for others. Over the last 20 years, I have facilitated a variety of Circles in workshops and retreats. As co-founder of Circle Works! Santa Fe, my goal is to share the experience of Transformational Circles with families, groups, and organizations to help them find compassionate and empowering solutions to life’s struggles.
In addition to co-founding Circle Works! Santa Fe, I serve as a mental health counselor at The Gloaming at Santa Fe, LLC, a counseling and life-coaching practice. My specialties include career counseling, religious and spiritual issues in counseling and supervision, concerns related to sexual orientation, and other general counseling issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, and trauma). I integrate a variety of counseling approaches, including Humanistic Counseling, Internal Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, EMDR, Guided Imagery, and Hypnosis. You can learn more about my specialties and approach to counseling by visiting my website (www.thegloamingatsantafe.com).
I have worked as an adjunct instructor in the counseling programs at The College at Brockport in New York and Southwestern College in Santa Fe. I also served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at The College at Brockport in Brockport, New York. Over the years, I have taught courses in career development and counseling, multicultural counseling and ethics, and human development, as well as a variety of supervision courses.
My educational background includes B.A. degrees in Sociology and Religious Studies from the University of Florida, an M.A. degree in Religious Studies from Chicago Theological Seminary, and M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. I am currently completing a Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education at the University of Rochester.

We both provide individual and group consultation services through CircleWorks! Santa Fe. Since we are trained in the field of counseling/psychotherapy, we often are asked to explain the differences between counseling/coaching / psychotherapy and our consultation work.
Here is our response:
Counseling/psychotherapy can be very useful when you find yourself in a position where your emotional struggles are leading the way and inhibiting you from living your life in an optimal way. For example, counseling/psychotherapy is most helpful if you find yourself experiencing depression, debilitating anxiety, or a severe lack of confidence in your life among other emotional concerns.
Consultation can be most helpful when you find yourself in need of guidance, direction, or training in order to achieve your goals. Consultation is always goal-directed and, while we may talk about your emotional experiences during a consultation session, it is not the primary focus of our overall conversations and work together. If you are interested in counseling/psychotherapy, Elaine is available to work with you through her counseling practice at The Gloaming at Santa Fe.
Coaching versus Consulting
A very good way to distinguish between Coaching and Consulting is described by David Mason, who is a trainer, performance development coach and internationally best-selling author.
You realize you have a problem and you need to fix it. You don't know exactly what is wrong but you know that your business, (your organization, a private group you belong to or your community) really needs some help.
Are you unsure if you should hire a coach or a consultant?
It is important to know the differences between the two because there are certainly significant differences between consulting and coaching.
Consultants usually specialize in one particular field of expertise, whether it be accounting, technology, staffing, marketing or any one of many other components of a business.
An independent outside consultant will analyze and look at your situation and determine weak spots, strong points and identify missing elements and gaps. They will then propose a plan and a cost. If hired the consultant will either tell you what needs to be done or in many cases do it for you.
What a consultant cannot do is help you transform your business into being successful if the problem is you. Most consultants don't focus on people but on a goal.
A coach is a facilitator of growth and change. The role of the coach is to help you and through you they can make a difference in your business, your organization and in your life.
Hiring a coach doesn't mean you have serious problems. Hiring a coach means you are aware that if you make certain improvements in your behaviors and core beliefs, your chances of being successful will increase dramatically.
To simplify, a consultant will advise their clients on how to solve the problem while a coach helps guide the client to their own conclusions.
Consultants are focused on the results whereas coaches are focused on the individual.
You hire a consultant to produce a certain outcome and you hire a coach to support and guide you to achieve the outcome yourself.
Metaphorically, a consultant gives you a fish and feeds you a meal, while a coach teaches you to fish so you can feed yourself indefinitely.
